My daughters love to go to my closet and dress up in my fancy shoes. They look cute doing it, and it makes me happy that those shoes are getting some use! For the last 10 years I’ve been working at a firm with a casual dress policy, so heels went out the window a decade ago. And for the five years I’ve been a mom, even my nice flats seem like too much most days!
Thank goodness we’re in an era where sneakers are trendy, and there are currently a lot of great options out there! Your kids aren’t the only ones who should have something new for back-to-school. If you’re in need of some new kicks, check out these options!
You probably had a pair of sneakers from Vans, Converse, or Keds in the 1990s or 2000s — or maybe you had all of them! These classics will never go out of style. You may even find yourself matching your kiddos — and trying to ride their skateboard down the street!
Sporty sneakers aren’t just for exercise anymore. Many of the brands that used to focus on shoes for running or specific sports are now making street sneakers for women: Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Puma, Reebok — you name it!
You can get street sneakers from your favorite sporty brands at your local sporting goods store or department store. In addition, many specialty stores, like J.Crew, have periodic partnerships with these brands. I choose these sneakers when weather conditions are less than ideal, or when I anticipate running after my kids!
There are a number of new trendy brands that either focus exclusively on sneakers or have them as part of their offerings. First up is Allbirds, which makes sneakers from sustainable wool. Time Magazine called them “the world’s most comfortable shoes.”
Next up is Vince, the fashion brand that offers a number of different slip-on sneaker options for women in various colors and fabrics. One of the most popular is the perforated “Blair” style, shown above. You’ll catch trendy moms all over Boston stepping out in these shoes!
For other trendy options at a variety of price points, check out the following brands: Greats, Payless Shoe Source, UGG Australia, Superga, and Steve Madden. And now, for some back to school shopping for you, mama!
