Shopping for insurance is one of those things that leaves me feeling a little dirty. I dread it. I dread speaking to the fast-talking salesperson on the other end of the line. I hate not fully understanding how much coverage I need. How much is too much? How much is too little? How much should you spend so that you have peace of mind?

Women are making the majority of household decisions (but I didn’t need to tell you that, did I?), according to this Harvard Business Review article. If we’re doing it, we might as well do it right. I was asked to try out YourPoncho, a local company that claims they will review your existing insurance policies, give you expert advice, and potentially save you hundreds of dollars. Obviously, I jumped at the chance, because if nothing else, I wanted some piece of mind that the decisions I had made when choosing my policies were the right ones.

This is what it looks like.
This is what it looks like.

I logged onto YourPoncho, signed up, took a picture of each of my policies, uploaded them to the site, and waited. It was truly that simple. Within a day I had received an email telling me the analysis of my policies was complete and I could log back in to check it out.

What was interesting for me was that it was in simple language. Language I could understand. It told me whether my current amount of coverage was acceptable or not. Item by item, it told me whether my coverage was GREAT or GOOD or NEEDS IMPROVEMENT. Thankfully, most of my coverage was GREAT but I had a few GOODs. It explained why and what they’d recommend. Simple, clear, with no gimmicks. How refreshing. The company gives you the opportunity to apply for a better policy if you’re not pleased with the one you have. They shop many different insurance companies to do this. I also liked the personal touches — the rep from the company both emailed and called me a couple of times to ensure that I fully understood the feedback they had given.

The YourPoncho team. A friendly looking bunch.

My only hesitation with this system was when I was uploading my policies. I didn’t know this company from a hole in the ground… why, exactly, was it OK for me to upload my complete insurance coverage to their site? But this is 2016, so I jumped in with both feet — and I didn’t regret it. If you want to read more, I found their blog to be an interesting source of information.

In the end, I’m happy I tried it. And I suggest you do it, too, if you’re looking for some insurance peace of mind. You can never have too much.
