Peloton :: It’s More Than a Workout (It’s Therapy)

I heard about the fancy spin bike, remembered the controversial commercial, and never thought I would be one to actually purchase the Peloton.

But I did!

And I am never looking back.

After glowing reviews from friends and hearing more and more people I know join this club, I looked into purchasing the bike myself. I read about it, researched it, and finally decided I was going to buy one. I am not one to stick to a workout routine and am always looking for something to help me get in shape.

After a little convincing of my husband, I splurged and jumped on the train.

I bought a Peloton. I spent the money, I waited patiently for delivery, I watched the videos on clipping in and out. I was ready.

The first few rides were terrible. And when I say terrible, I mean terrible. I could barely stand up when the instructors told me to, my output was low, and the final stretching over the bike seemed impossible. And that was just a stretch.

All of this and, weirdly, I was enjoying it! I can’t quite pinpoint the feeling after each ride, but it’s there. It is certainly a sense of accomplishment. But there’s more to it.

It’s therapy.

The Peloton has become my personal therapist. And I’ve connected with each of the instructors on a deep level.

Cody talking about his mom and the holidays. Tunde giving the most inspiring quotes and sharing how she’s lost 70 pounds. The way Ally really looks me in the eyes. And Robyn… she is a pregnant idol. 

I don’t know what it is. These instructors are like no one else I’ve met at the gym. I am not sure if they all have PhDs in psychology, or what? They know what to say and how to say it — they relate to me. I feel like I have someone talking to me each time I clip in. Like, really talking to me. They know what I am going through (and, man, it has been a lot this year.) And they know how to help me heal. I haven’t done classes with all of the instructors, but that is definitely my goal for 2021.

Their music choices are all fabulous. I love having the option of different genres and themes. These instructors don’t disappoint. They also know all the words and can hit every step. Their moves are amazing while sitting on top of the bike.

In addition to the rides, I’ve done a few strength, cardio, and yoga classes through the app. These do not disappoint either! They are tough yet meaningful, and they leave me breathless. They’re really what I’ve been needing lately. 

Not only do I have these inspirational instructors, I have friends who also inspire me on the bike. Recently, I’ve connected with a friend on a different level. We text or call each day to find out when the other one is riding or lifting, and we do the same class. The “Three, two, one, go!” over the phone each time we start a class together has meant so much to me. 

I know, I know, I sound like a cliché. But it’s all true. I have found my workout niche, and I hope to continue my fitness adventure with Peloton.

I didn’t realize this was exactly what I needed! Thank you, Peloton, for helping me heal these past few months and for keeping me moving forward to reach my goals each day.

Whether it is the Peloton or not, or maybe even the app without the bike, I highly recommend finding something you enjoy and can muscle through each day that brings you what I have found.
